Os primatas são os mamíferos que compõe a ordem Primates, onde estão incluídos os micos, macacos, gorilas, chimpanzés, orangotangos,lêmures, os babuínos, os seres humanos e outros hominídeos. O polegar, ou dedo oposto, também é uma característica mas não é exclusiva dos primatas (os gambás também têm polegares). Alguns macacos têm os polegares apenas nos seus pés e não nas mãos. O ramo damamalogia que estuda os primatas é a primatologia.
